For the handful of people who join me here everyday, don’t worry, I plan to keep going. But, the M-F format might get cut back. I’m not going to spend so much time when not that many people are checking in. I don’t expect large crowds, although for a time we were getting them. I guess it’s my fault for not being compelling enough to keep them around. Maybe it’s too much. I thought a daily blog was something the pipe smoking world didn’t have and possibly wanted.
The posts are not that long, but it does take an hour or so by the time I write them, check and correct all the errors. Find a photo, can’t just steal something off the internet, then format it all and fill out all the SEO garbage. It takes awhile. It would be my pleasure to do it if a lot of people were getting something out of it. Seeing ads is just gravy for me, but it is a perk, to be honest.
I’ll keep going, but if you don’t see me for a day or two here and there it’s because nothing is really going on and I’m not just going to ramble to myself just to get a post up. I’m working on something else now and it might be a better fit for my time. Hopefully it will be ready for the Fall. Don’t be surprised if the Blob and possibly the entire magazine website goes off into the ether.
A wise reader raised the point that moisture could be my problem when it comes to packing my pipe. This is a great point. As soon as I read that I thought the problems I have are far worse in the summer. They could very well be right. Yesterday I said I had a few pipes that have draw problems and I don’t know where that comes from. I do use the same tobacco, so dismissed that as a factor, but I do have a humidity problem in the summer.
If the tobacco is not as dry as I’m used to it could create that draw problem. Also when the moisture is stuck in the pipe it can develop a tiny bit of goo. It’s the perfect storm for a bad smoke. The more I think about it, the more I’m sure this is my problem. What would I do without my wise, experienced readers?
It got me thinking about the internet and YouTube. You can watch all the videos you want, but it doesn’t make you as smart as you think. Sure you can find anything you want, and can get walked through just about any job you want. But sitting by yourself and doing something and learning from experience, nothing beats that. The internet has turned everyone into a expert in every field. Everyone I work with is a lawyer, scientist, war strategist, and virologist. All-in-one!
But a guy who probably just smokes his pipe while he’s reading a book is wiser as far as I’m concerned. Give me ten of those guys and leave the rest to all the freaks on the internet.
Mr Armchair Piper put out a video reminding us about Smoke Rings Around the World. I urge you to plan ahead. Let’s make this day something special. It will be hard because it just for fun and people have been conditioned to look for free things. What’s in it for me? Let’s just do it because it’s a great idea.
Hope you’re sitting down. C&D has released a new Small Batch! Sun Bear Mountain Flower. I’m sure it’s a great blend and will look forward to seeing what people have to say about it. I don’t know why I have an aversion to small batches. It’s a great thing that a company is trying to come up with new thing and blends that people will like. The fact that they are marketed in such a way that people want to jump on quickly for fear of missing out. Probably a smart thing. Also, since people ultimately vote with their wallets, the fact that they make money proves them right. But for some reason, it has worn me out.
I feel terrible that my attitude seems to diminish what they are doing. Just because I won’t get it, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. If you like Sun Bear it might be a good idea to try it. Jeremy Reeves is a fantastic blender and I wish him all the best. I think I may need an attitude check on these things. Maybe I’m just a grumpy [deleted] and you shouldn’t listen to me.
If I were honest, I think the problem I have is if you don’t drop what you’re doing and buy it immediately, you won’t get any. Don’t really like that. If a salesman says to me you have to do something right now, I’ll always say, pass. Even if I want it. I don’t like being put in that position.
Encouraging these types of things is the right thing to do, I just can’t bring myself to do it. If anyone out there gets the blends and wants to write up a review and promote it, the website is open to you.
Roland the Dragon made a video about dirty tampers. So much focus is always on keeping your pipe clean it’s easy to overlook something like tampers. It was a good point. It also got me thinking about my lighters. Those were long overdue for a good cleaning. I spent a lot of time yesterday taking care of those. I used Isopropyl alcohol and cleaned them all up. The Zippos were the worst, I let them go too far.
Now it’s like I have a row of brand new lighters. I should get them on a schedule, maybe clean one a month to keep them all in tip-top condition. The time would be well worth it. Thinking ahead and sticking to your goals is the key. Not only to pipe smoking but just about everything else.
For The Record
I timed this Blob. From when I sat down to when I hit “publish” which is going to be 30 seconds from now has been 55 minutes and 26 seconds.
